Holy Cross Church

This monument of early Christian Armenian architecture is situated in the center of Aparan city. It is considered that it was the royal chapel of Archakunyats’ palace and it was built in IV-V centuries. The complex includes the main S. Khach Church (or Kasagh Basilica), the later built colonnade and single-nave basilica church. The monument is built of large gray tuff stones. The decorative sculptures of the entrance vestibules of the western and southern facades of the church are among the best examples of early medieval Armenian sculptural art. By using the details and fragments found during the excavations, it was possible to restore the overall architectural image of the monument and make a reconstruction plan. One of the valuable ancient sculptural caps of the Kasagh Basilica Church now is exhibited in the History Museum of Armenia. 1980-1990 complex S. Khach Church, with the adjacent depository, was completely reconstructed and became a functioning church in 1996.
