The Surb Nshan Church was built in 1859-1864. According to the inscriptions above the southern and northern entrances the church was named Surb Nshan in 1870. This is one of the earliest apostolic churches in Gyumri with centralized dome and a bell tower. During the Soviet period the church stopped functioning and the building served as a repository and even as a theatre. There was an attempt to turn the monastery into an observatory, but the lightning hit the church and destroyed all the equipment. The church building was badly damaged by the devastating earthquake in 1988, especially the dome and the bell tower. In the following years, the church was renovated.
